Common Eye and Vision Conditions

At The Vision Center, we believe that informed patients make the best decisions for their eye health. Learn more about common conditions that can affect your eyes and vision.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a common condition caused by an irregularly shaped cornea or lens that prevents light from focusing properly on the retina. It can cause blurred or distorted vision and may occur alongside nearsightedness or farsightedness. Astigmatism can usually be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery.

Cataracts

Cataracts occur when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, leading to vision impairment. They often develop slowly with age and can cause symptoms like glare, halos around lights, and reduced night vision. Cataract surgery is a highly effective treatment that replaces the cloudy lens with a clear artificial one.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, often due to high intraocular pressure. It is a leading cause of irreversible blindness, but early detection and treatment can preserve vision. Common treatments include prescription eye drops, laser therapy, or surgery.

Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the central part of the retina (the macula), leading to loss of central vision. It is a common cause of vision loss in people over 50. There are two types: dry and wet. While there is no cure, treatments and lifestyle changes can slow progression.

Dry Eye

Dry eye occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears or the right quality of tears. It can cause discomfort, redness, burning, and blurred vision. Treatment options include artificial tears, prescription medications, or procedures to help retain natural tears.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that damages the small blood vessels in the retina. It can cause vision loss if not managed properly. Early stages may not show symptoms, so regular eye exams are critical for early detection and treatment.

Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)

Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin clear tissue over the white part of the eye. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, allergens, or irritants. Symptoms include redness, itching, tearing, and discharge. Treatment depends on the underlying cause.

Importance of Regular Eye Exams

Regular comprehensive eye exams are essential—even if you’re not experiencing any vision problems. Many serious eye conditions, like glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, develop without early symptoms but can be detected through a thorough in-person eye exam. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to preventing or delaying permanent vision loss.

Even if your eyes feel fine, routine check-ups play a critical role in protecting your long-term vision. At The Vision Center, we combine advanced diagnostic technology with personalized care to identify and manage eye conditions at their earliest stages.
